Physical activity, including participation in youth sports, is a critical part of childhood development and offers numerous physical, mental, social-emotional, and academic benefits to young people. In Oakland, only 14% of youth are getting an hour of physical activity per day, and there’s a stark gender gap as Oakland girls (9%) are much less likely to be sufficiently active than boys (19%).

It brings each component to life through nutritious meals, educational materials, and fun activities, leaving visitors smiling and inspired. Designed by the innovative team at Cruising Kitchens, the bus offers unique, interactive experiences that benefit Oakland kids and families.

Nutritious Food Distribution
Nourishing the Community
The passenger side of the bus focuses on providing nutritious meals and groceries. Partnering with Alameda County Community Food Bank, we deliver 500,000 pounds of groceries and fresh produce from California farms. Community Kitchens, with over 50 Oakland restaurants, helps prepare 50,000 hot meals for families, ensuring access to healthy, quality food across the city.

Empowering Through Literacy
On the driver’s side, the bus transforms into a free bookstore, offering thousands of age-appropriate and culturally reflective books curated with partners like the Oakland Literacy Coalition and Oakland Public Library. We distribute 500,000 books annually, with 100,000 given directly from the bus. These books inspire children to explore their identities and new perspectives.
