Celebrating our 20th Reimagined Schoolyard for Oakland Students!
With the completion of Joaquin Miller Elementary, Eat. Learn. Play. alongside KABOOM! and the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) have now fully remodeled 20 schoolyards. Stemming from the imagination of Oakland students, these kid-designed spaces provide access to safe and high-quality schoolyards for students and the surrounding school community.
As part of our vision to transform the school experience for a generation of Oakland students, Eat. Learn. Play. has been working to ensure all Oakland elementary and middle school students have access to the resources, support, and spaces for kids to thrive and have great childhoods. Our work includes remodeling more than 25 public elementary schoolyards throughout Oakland by the end of 2026 to be the dream places for kids to play, learn, and spend time with their classmates.
What We've Accomplished Together
Starting with Franklin Elementary in 2021, we’ve now transformed 20 schoolyards by adding new play structures designed by kids, gardens, nature exploration areas, outdoor classrooms, multi-sport courts, soccer fields, murals, and much more, bringing new life to each space.
Kids Served: 8,000 students per year now have new quality schoolyard playspaces; putting us on track to give 11,250 students per year equitable access over the next generation.
Volunteers: Over 4,000 volunteers have contributed over 30,000 hours of service to date, helping us design, plan and lead the hands-on construction of schoolyard playspace, putting us on track to engage more than 6,000 parents, school staff and Bay Area volunteers by the end of 2026.
Active Play Unleashed: We’re on track to make possible more than 16 million hours of kids’ active play over the lifespan of these great new schoolyard playspaces.
