Eat. Learn. Play. and DRK Foundation Release Advancing Literacy Efforts in Oakland Report

Ayesha Curry introduces the Advancing Literacy Efforts in Oakland Report

The report offers guidance and perspective from the field in supporting literacy efforts in Oakland.

Eat. Learn. Play. created the Advancing Literacy Efforts in Oakland Report in partnership with the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation and along with the Oakland Literacy Coalition and Being Human. The process of creating the report entailed exploratory interviews with leaders working deeply in Oakland and nationwide on literacy and early childhood efforts. We value the wisdom and experiences of these leaders and entered this process with the intent to listen and learn.

Interviews for the report were focused on:

  • Developing a stronger understanding of the ecosystem of partners working on literacy efforts in Oakland.

  • Learning about the successes in early literacy efforts and the areas where some ongoing needs and challenges are thwarting progress.

  • Gaining perspective on the potential role that Eat. Learn. Play. can have in supporting literacy work in Oakland.

The Advancing Literacy Efforts in Oakland report summarizes key themes and learning from these interviews. Also included is additional information gathered from a literature scan to build the context for this work and develop a deeper understanding of evidence-based practices to support literacy efforts.

The key insights in the report are serving as a blueprint and informing our LEARN strategies and investments. As we continue our efforts helping to ensure all Oakland elementary school students have the support and resources needed to become proficient readers, we will work to provide access to individualized and structured tutoring for elementary students reading below grade level.
