Tackling Literacy + Encouraging A Love of Reading in Oakland

“Reading is a crucial building block to academic success and unlocking lifelong opportunities, which is why we’ve made early literacy the focus of our LEARN pillar. We want to encourage kids to read by making it accessible, fun and inspirational. We hope that these free, book-sharing libraries will help plant the seeds needed to continue growing a culture of literacy for the next generation in Oakland.”

Our Challenge

We’re in the midst of a major literacy crisis in America. Nationwide, only 1 in 3 kids are reading at grade level by the end of third grade. In the last 10 years, progress for literacy rates in Oakland has been slow and incremental. In order for the next generation of Oakland youth to succeed, we must do more to make sure they are prepared. In Oakland, after more than a year of distance learning, only 15.4% of Black and 12.5% of Latino/a of all elementary school students are reading at grade level. Research shows reading  proficiency by the end of third grade is a key predictor for high school graduation and career success.

While significant attention focuses on reading in elementary schools, the journey to becoming a reader begins at birth and must be a priority in a child’s first years. Nationally, 80% of children that are behind in reading when they enter kindergarten never catch up. In Oakland, 65% of kids entered kindergarten already behind and considered “not fully ready to learn.” And although the literacy crisis predates the pandemic, the effects of distance learning only intensified the problem, disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable kids.

This Year’s Workday Charity Classic marks a major step in Eat. Learn. Play’s commitment to increasing literacy rates for kids in Oakland by supporting teacher-led classroom literacy projects, providing new books, and creating a comprehensive analysis of literacy opportunities and gaps in Oakland.

Workday and Eat. Learn. Play. have been partners since 2019, a partnership built on a shared set of values and a common belief in making a real impact in the communities we serve. Eat. Learn. Play. was one of the two beneficiaries of Workday’s community efforts at The 2022 Memorial Tournament presented by Workday, and both organizations will continue their partnership for at least the next 10 years.

Our Initiatives

The money raised from the Workday Charity Classic, in addition to a leading donation from Workday, will be used to:

Donate an additional $1 million in funding for teacher-led literacy projects in the Oakland Unified School District on the DonorsChoose platform. This follows a $1 million donation Eat. Learn. Play. made in December in 2021 with the help of Workday for over 1,000 classroom literacy projects supporting more than 450 teachers across 83 schools in Oakland. This donation will ensure that Oakland teachers continue to have the resources to support their students’ journeys as readers.

Help donate 300,000 new books to kids and families as part of our effort to ignite a culture of literacy in Oakland. These books will be distributed through the Eat. Learn. Play. Bus and Little Town Libraries program, as well as with the Oakland Unified School District and other community partners.

Create a State of Literacy – Oakland report in partnership with the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, Oakland Literacy Coalition, and other community stakeholders. The report will provide a comprehensive landscape analysis of Oakland's literacy opportunities and gaps. In addition, it will provide a blueprint for major future investments and advocacy work in our efforts to dramatically increase Kindergarten readiness and third-grade reading levels across Oakland.
